Today Americans were celebrating Thanksgiving, it’s THE day to come together around the table with family and friends and give thanks for all the good we have.

But for a lot of people, the important day is the day after Thanksgiving … Black Friday and in recent years Cyber Monday has been added.

As business owners we are made to believe that we have to offer an awesome Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday deal otherwise we are not a real business and we don’t serve our customers well.

Really?

I actually love the message from Thrive Themes. They are sticking to their policy of not doing any seasonal sales for their products and services, not even on Black Friday.

Shane Melaugh from Thrive Themes explains and justifies this decision with fairness to his existing clients so they don’t feel betrayed and have buyer’s remorse.

I do agree with him. I find it often very unfair when new customers get great deals while existing loyal clients are explicitly excluded (often seen for phone and internet plans).

In addition, I find sales do contribute to cluttered homes that become more and more a problem. Recent statistics show that the average size of the North American home has almost tripled in size over the past 50 years. But that’s not all because 1 out of every 10 people also rent additional offsite storage.

The average person owns 300,000 items and it starts with our children already. British researchers found that the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys but plays with just 12 daily.

This all sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

How to shop guilt-free

If you already drown in clutter but still want to take advantage of the best Black Friday deals, use my Black Friday tip for a guilt-free shopping spree.

For every item that you buy tomorrow (or in the future) let go of an item that you haven’t used in a long time or that you don’t love anymore.

If you wanted to go one step further and do even more ‘painless’ clutter clearing, adapt this tip to the following maxim:

When something new comes in, two old things go out.

or three, or four 🙂
