Clutter Clearing and Mercury retrograde

Decluttering when Mercury is retrograde

Mercury is retrograde from September 26 to October 17, 2021! (Pacific time)

(Blog post from 2017 updated every time Mercury goes retrograde. If you read this after October 18, 2021 check here to find out when Mercury is retrograde next).

What does that mean for you and your life and business?

Mercury rules communication, contracts, agreements, codes (i.e. computer code), transportation, shipping, travel, automobiles etc.

Things that might go wrong or happen to you during Mercury retrograde:

  • you miss a train or plane connection
  • your car breaks down
  • your computer crashes (do you have a recent back-up ready?)
  • you are late for meetings/appointments no matter how early you leave
  • you are more forgetful
  • communicating is harder
  • listening seems harder
  • misunderstandings happen
  • etc

Mercury’s retrograde periods can cause your plans to go awry. So try to be flexible, allow time for extra travel, and avoid signing important contracts. You can review projects and plans, but wait until Mercury is direct again to make any final decisions.

Clutter Clearing during Mercury retrograde?

While you shouldn’t make any important moves, Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to reflect on the past. This means it’s an excellent time for Clutter Clearing, finishing started projects (also a type of clutter) and letting go of limiting beliefs (internal clutter).

Most people think Clutter Clearing is about organizing but it’s actually more about exploring and reflecting on the stories we tell ourselves, the ones that keep us stuck. Clutter Clearing can get you unstuck and get organized is simply a nice side-effect.

Mercury in retrograde gives you an extra boost to sweep out all that (internal and external) clutter.

The perfect use of this time right now is, therefore, to reflect on 2021 and finish everything up. On the other hand, don’t start anything new yet otherwise, you might regret it later.

  • don’t make important decisions
  • don’t sign important contracts
  • don’t finalize any important plans

Goals and (New Years) Resolutions

And some people even say to wait on setting new goals or resolutions, to not make them until October 18, 2021, when “the spook” is over.

I personally set my intentions and goals every New Moon even while Mercury is retrograde but I might tailor the intentions and goals to be more aligned with the energies of Mercury, like communication, letting go of things, finishing projects.

New Moon days are the most ideal dates to set intentions, also to stop and replace bad habits with better ones (bad habits are often the reason we have clutter).

Paying attention of Mercury retrograde periods will allow you to avoid a lot of frustrations and disappointments and in return can increase your productivity.

You might be tempted to put this all off as nonsense but once you begin to pay attention to what happens to you during these phases you might revise your opinion.

Let me know in the comments below your experience with Mercury retrograde.

    Hi Conny,

I like how you say clutter clearing is about exploring and reflecting on the stories we tell ourselves.

After almost a year of a stalled renovation project, work began again with a new contractor at the beginning of mercury retrograde and things couldn’t be going better!

The value of completing an unfinished project can’t be underestimated!

Thank you for your feedback Olivia and I am so happy for you that your renovation project is finally going well. I know all about how stressful it is to live in a construction site, but the more we enjoy the results afterward 🙂
